Arbent is a French municipality with 3367 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Oyonnax in the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Arbent is located at 565  m , about five kilometers north-northeast of the city of Oyonnax and 36 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The village extends in the north of Bugey , in the Jura , on both sides of the Ruisseau de Merdanson , which here emerges from a narrow valley into the valley basin of Oyonnax.

The area of the 23.49 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The eastern part is taken up by the valley basin of Oyonnax, which here has a width of about 1.5 km and forms a syncline in the Folded Jura . This valley basin is drained by the Merdanson to the west to the Bienne . To the east, the community area extends over the densely wooded Jura slope ( Forêt de Macretet , Bois du Roy ) to the ridge of Mont de la Chaux , on which the highest elevation of Arbent is reached at 1,100  m . Here rises the Ruisseau de Merdanson, which has created a deep erosion channel in its upper course . The eastern boundary of the area is the Viry basin.

The former hamlet of Marchon ( 560  m ) on the outskirts of Oyonnax and various new housing developments belong to Arbent . Neighboring communities of Arbent are Viry in the north and east, Échallon and Oyonnax in the south and Dortan in the west.

history

The origin of Arbent was a monastery founded around the year 1100, which was dependent on Saint-Claude . The monks cleared the area, made it arable and laid the foundation stone for settlement. In the Middle Ages, Arbent was a separate rule that belonged to the Lords of Thoire-Villars and came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy in 1402 . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601. As part of the conflict between France and Franche-Comté , Arbent was destroyed by troops from the Free County in the 17th century.

Attractions

The Gothic parish church of Saint-Laurent was built in the 15th century. The last remains of the former monastery, which was destroyed in the 17th century, were removed in the 1930s. There is a chapel in Marchon.
