geography
Bellignat is located at 522 m , about three kilometers southwest of the city of Oyonnax and 31 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The village extends in the north of Bugey , in the wide valley of the Ange in the Jura , between the heights of the Forêt de Châtelard in the west and the Forêt Noire in the east.
The area of the 7.84 km² municipal area covers a section of the southern French Jura. The central part is taken up by the valley of the Ange, which has a width of about 1.5 kilometers and forms a syncline in the Jura folds . The valley basin is drained towards the south to the Oignin . To the west, the municipal soil extends to the ridge of the Châtelard ( 725 m ). To the east of the valley basin, the municipal area extends over a densely wooded slope ( Forêt Noire ) to the anticline of Mont Jora. On the Haut Crêt , which slopes steeply towards the east to a spring valley of the Ange, the highest point of Bellignat is reached at 983 m .
Neighboring communities of Bellignat are Oyonnax in the northeast, Apremont in the southeast, Groissiat in the southwest and Géovreisset in the northwest.
history
The discovery of a bronze age tumulus suggests a very early settlement of the municipality of Bellignat. In the 12th century the village formed its own small lordship. The sovereignty of the area passed to the Counts of Savoy in 1402 . With the Treaty of Lyon , Bellignat came to France in 1601. From the second half of the 19th century, Bellignat, together with the other communities in the Oyonnax valley, experienced an economic boom through the introduction of industry (silk industry, comb manufacture and later plastics processing).
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Christophe originally dates from the 11th century, but was later changed several times; she has a Gothic choir.
