Genissiat dam

Injoux-Génissiat is a French commune with 1,136 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine in the Arrondissement of Nantua and is a member of the Pays Bellegardien municipal association .

Injoux-Génissiat is located at 556  m , about seven kilometers southwest of the town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine (as the crow flies). The double community extends in the Bellegarde basin, in a panoramic location on the Michaille plateau, around 220 meters above the Rhone valley , at the eastern foot of the Crêt du Nu , a ridge of the French Jura .

The area of ​​the 29.61 square kilometers large municipal area covers a section of the Rhône valley. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the wide plateau of the Michaille, which lies at an average of 520  m . It descends gradually towards the east and is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the Rhône. The eastern border runs along the Rhône, which lies here in a valley flanked by cliffs in sections and dammed up into a lake by the Génissiat dam. To the west, the community area extends over the densely wooded steep Jura slope ( Bois d'Injoux ) to the crest of the Crêt du Nu, on which at 1351 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Injoux-Génissiat is reached.

history

The Rhône valley near Génissiat was already settled in prehistoric times, but the former location is now flooded by the reservoir.

Injoux formed a parish from the 12th century. In the 14th century, Génissiat was the center of a rule that belonged to the de Coucy family. The place is mentioned in documents in 1440 under the Latinized name Gignissiacus . The names Genissia (1536) and Ginissie and Ginissiaz (1563) have been handed down from a later period . The town of Craz first appears in the documents around 1365.

With effect from January 1, 1973, the three previously independent municipalities Injoux, Génissiat and Craz merged to form today's municipality of Injoux-Génissiat.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Laurent-et-Saint-Didier in Injoux was built in Gothic styles and later redesigned several times. Craz Church is also originally Gothic. The castle of Génissiat dates back to the 14th century, of which ruins have been preserved. The Génissiat dam, inaugurated in 1948, is located below the village .

With 1136 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Injoux-Génissiat is one of the smaller communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1980s. The local residents of Injoux-Génissiat are called Injolans in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Injoux-Génissiat was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. The river power plant on the Génissiat dam in the Rhône, which was completed in 1948, is one of the most important employers . In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. A large number of employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and mainly in nearby Bellegarde-sur-Valserine.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the  D991 departmental road that leads from Châtillon-en-Michaille to Seyssel . Further regional road connections exist with Franclens east of the Rhône and via the Jura pass Col de Richemond with Hotonnes. The closest connection to the A40 motorway  is around eight kilometers away. The place had a train station on the Lyon – Genève railway line .

In Injoux-Génissiat there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
