Azania Front Cathedral

The Azania Front Cathedral ( German  for "Azania Front Lutheran Church" ) is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Dar es Salaam ( Tanzania ) and the cathedral of the Diocese of Dar es Salaam of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania .

Location and history

The building is one of the most famous landmarks and tourist attractions in the city. It is located in the center of the city, near the sea, overlooking the port . The name comes from an earlier name for the Uferstraße. German missionaries had the church built during the colonial period between 1898 and 1899. The local government building director Friedrich Gurlitt created the design .

Architecture and equipment

The building is a hall church in native style with red tiled roofs, tiles, canopies over the windows and bright white walls. The tower, which can be seen from afar, extends over the central entrance area. The original interior is largely preserved. In the nave are side galleries. The neo-Gothic altar made of tropical hardwood bears the German inscription: "I leave peace to you, I give you my peace" ( Jn 14:27  LUT ), an allusion to the name Dar-es-Salam - "House of Peace".
