Chapelle-des-Bois in winter

Chapelle-des-Bois is a French commune with a population of 253 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chapelle-des-Bois is located 1085  m above sea level, about eleven kilometers northeast of the city of Morez (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a wide hollow at the northwest foot of the Roche Champion rock face belonging to the Risoux , near the border with Switzerland . Chapelle-des-Bois is the southernmost commune of the Doubs department.

The 39.69 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by the wide longitudinal basin of Chapelle-des-Bois, which is oriented towards the southwest-northeast in accordance with the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. It is divided into several partial troughs, of which the Combe des Cives forms the northeastern conclusion. The entire area has no noteworthy surface rivers because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In some hollows, which are sealed by layers of marl and clay , raised bogs and the Lac des Mortes bog lake (in the extreme southwest of the area) could develop. The plateau shows only very small differences in relief and shows a loose structure of meadow and pasture land as well as forest areas.

To the northwest, the community area extends into the impassable, densely forested area of Mont Noir (up to 1234 m), in which ridges and karst hollows alternate. In contrast, the plateau in the southeast is flanked by the wide ridge of the Grand Risoux . In the area of the Roche Champion and the Roche Bernard it slopes steeply towards Chapelle-des-Bois with a cliff edge. At 1371 m, the highest point of Chapelle-des-Bois is reached on a summit of the Risoux on the border with Switzerland. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Chapelle-des-Bois also includes several hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Les Mortes ( 1095  m ) in a depression west of Lac des Mortes
  • Chez Michel ( 1098  m ) at the northwest foot of the Roche Champion
  • Chez Buffard ( 1090  m ) in the Combe des Cives between the heights of Mont Noir and Risoux

Neighboring municipalities of Chapelle-des-Bois are Bois-d'Amont and Bellefontaine in the south, Morbier , Lac-des-Rouges-Truites and Foncine-le-Bas in the west, Foncine-le-Haut , Châtelblanc and Chaux-Neuve in the north as well the Swiss community of Le Chenit in the east.

history

In the Middle Ages, what is now the Chapelle-des-Bois area belonged to the Châtelblanc and Mouthe lords. At that time it only consisted of a few farms with no actual town center. It was not until 1632 that the settlers in the area, for whom going to church in Chaux-Neuve was too strenuous because of the distance, founded a chapel called Chapelle es-bos (Chapel in the Forest). As a result, the settlement of the same name developed around this chapel. Together with Franche-Comté , Chapelle-des-Bois came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Chapelle-des-Bois is a member of the Communauté de communes des Hauts du Doubs, which comprises 13 localities .

With 253 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chapelle-des-Bois is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (602 people were still counted in 1881), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chapelle-des-Bois was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In the past, peat was partly cut in the moor areas. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a sawmill and a cheese factory. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Chapelle-des-Bois now also benefits from tourism. The community is geared towards both summer tourism (hiking, cycling, fishing, golf) and winter tourism (Nordic skiing).

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Morez to Chaux-Neuve. Another road connection exists with Morbier.
