geography

Septfontaines is located at 766  m above sea level, about 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a small hill in the middle of the wide high plateau of Levier, which belongs to the second plateau of the Jura.

The area of the municipality of 18.37 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the high plateau of Levier, which averages 730 m and is around five kilometers wide. It is mostly covered by meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the middle of this plateau is the hill of Septfontaines, on which the highest point of the municipality is reached at 810 m. To the south of it lies the Combe de la Chaux valley . The southern border lies in the wooded area of the Bois du Pessoul , while the communal soil extends into the Forêt de la Joux in the west . In the north of the foot of the slope forms anticline of Malvaux the demarcation.

Neighboring municipalities of Septfontaines are Amathay-Vésigneux in the north, Évillers and Sombacour in the east, Chapelle-d'Huin in the south and Levier in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Septfontaines belonged to the lords of Châteauvieux and Montmahoux, which were under the suzerainty of the lords of Chalon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2002 Septfontaines has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes Altitude 800, which comprises eleven localities .
