Sarrageois is a French municipality with 194 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Sarrageois is located at 950 m above sea level, about 23 kilometers southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The street-lined village extends in the Jura , slightly elevated on the northern slope of the valley of the Val de Mouthe, above the Doubs valley north of the Risoux , near the border with Switzerland .
The area of the 13.22 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the approximately two kilometer wide longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe, which forms a syncline in geological and tectonic terms . The Doubs meanders through a wide valley and drains the area to the northeast. On its northwest side, the valley basin is flanked by the wooded height of the Bois de la Pila ( 1078 m ). With a narrow strip, the municipality extends south into the partly wooded, partly pastureland area of Crêt Sapeau ( 1292 m ) and Crêt Gellin , on which the highest point of Sarrageois is reached at 1314 m. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the very south are the heights of the Petit Risoux . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Neighboring communities of Sarrageois are Mouthe and Rondefontaine in the west, Remoray-Boujeons in the north, Gellin and Les Villedieu in the east and the Swiss community Le Lieu in the south.
history
Sarrageois was first mentioned in 1296 under the name Charagey . It has belonged to the Mouthe estate since the Middle Ages. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Sarrageois is a member of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .
Attractions
The Église de l'Immaculée-Conception (Church of the Immaculate Conception) in Sarrageois was built in 1682 and later enlarged. In the town center there are some characteristic farmhouses in the traditional style of the Upper Jurassic.

With 194 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Sarrageois is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (170 people were still counted in 1881), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Sarrageois was mainly a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a wood processing company. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares near the D437 departmental road that leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier.
