Le Luhier is a French municipality with 222 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Le Luhier is located at 809 m, 13 kilometers north-northeast of Morteau and about 15 kilometers northwest of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura in a hollow in the west of the high plateau of Maîche, at the northern foot of Mont Repentir.

The area of the 5.21 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the slightly undulating plateau, which averages 820 m. It consists mainly of meadow and pasture land, but also has a larger forest area in the east with the Grande Aige . The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. Slightly sunk into the plateau are two valleys, which topographically belong to the catchment area of the Pissoux stream (tributary of the Dessoubre ). To the south, the community area extends over a wooded slope on the Mont Repentir , on which the highest elevation of Le Luhier is reached at 1050 m. The Mont Repentir is part of the wide ridge of Le Mémont. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this ridge forms an anticline of the Jura folds and is oriented in the south-west-north-east direction in accordance with the direction of the mountains in this region.

Le Luhier includes the hamlet of Les Guérites (835 m) on the plateau at the north foot of Mont Repentir and various individual farms. Neighboring communities of Le Luhier are Montbéliardot in the north, Bonnétage and Le Russey in the east, Le Mémont in the south and Mont-de-Laval in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Le Luhier belonged to the lordship of Réaumont, which was under the sovereignty of the Lords of Montfaucon and from the 15th century under that of the Counts of Montbéliard. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the arrondissement of Montbéliard , all municipalities of the canton came to the arrondissement of Pontarlier.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (256 people were counted in 1891), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Luhier was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (cattle and dairy farming, some arable farming) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Maîche to Orchamps-Vennes . There are other road links with Laval-le-Prieuré and Le Mémont.
