Labergement-Sainte-Marie is a French commune with 1,198 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Labergement-Sainte-Marie is located at 862  m above sea level, about 15 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in an open longitudinal basin on the upper reaches of the Doubs , between the lakes Lac de Saint-Point and Lac de Remoray .

The area of the 22.12 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Labergement basin ( 850  m ), which is oriented in the south-west-north-east direction according to the strike direction of the Folded Jura in this region. The approximately 2 km wide basin is drained by the Doubs, which enters a gorge-like valley from the southeast and then flows with numerous meanders to the northeast to Lac de Saint-Point. The flat valley floor is largely marshland and also includes the Lac de Remoray, its outlet tavern and the Blanc Bief coming from the east .

The valley basin of Labergement is flanked by predominantly wooded ridges: in the south by Mont de la Croix (up to 1000 m), in the east by Rochat ( 1025  m ) and the Fuvelle , at 1054 m the highest elevation of Labergement-Sainte-Marie is reached, and in the northwest by the Grand-Côte (up to 980 m). To the north, the municipal area extends into the basin of Derrière le Mont and to the Bois du Lac , a hill west of the Lac de Saint-Point, and to the Bois de Chargebin ( 1040  m ) in the extreme northwest. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Labergement-Sainte-Marie includes the place Granges-Sainte-Marie ( 858  m ) on the eastern edge of the valley basin on the Blanc Bief and various individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Labergement-Sainte-Marie are Vaux-et-Chantegrue , Malpas , Saint-Point-Lac and Malbuisson in the north, Saint-Antoine in the east, Fourcatier-et-Maison-Neuve , Rochejean and Brey-et-Maison-du- Bois in the south and Remoray-Boujeons in the west.

history

The origin of the settlement of the area lies in the founding of the Cistercian monastery of Mont-Sainte-Marie in 1196. The monks of the monastery made the area arable, so that soon the first farming settlements developed. In the Middle Ages, Mont-Sainte-Marie and Rochejean formed an ecclesiastical and secular rule. Labergement was badly affected during the Thirty Years War . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

In the course of the French Revolution , the monastery was closed. At the beginning of the 18th century, Labergement was the location of a nail smithy. The village was hit several times by major fires, especially in 1825 and 1898. In 1882 Labergement was officially renamed Labergement-Sainte-Marie. The town was connected to the rail network in 1900 by a tram that ran from Pontarlier via Mouthe to Foncine-le-Haut . However, operations ceased after the Second World War . In 1915 the connection to the international railway line from Dijon via Frasne and Vallorbe to Lausanne was even more important for the village . The area changed in 1972 when the neighboring town of Granges-Sainte-Marie merged with Labergement-Sainte-Marie. Today Labergement-Sainte-Marie is a member of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association .
