Sombacour is a French municipality with 641 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Sombacour is located at 749 m above sea level, about nine kilometers northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the southern edge of the high plateau of Val d'Usiers, at the foot of the Bois des Raffours and at the entrance to the Col des Roches valley.
The area of the municipality of 19.30 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the Val d'Usiers plateau with the Sombacour basin, which is on average 730 m. The plateau rises slightly to the west, and the communal soil extends into the vast wooded areas of Bois de Byans (up to 840 m) and Bois du Pessoul . In between is the dry valley of the Combe d'Orgeval . To the south-east of Sombacour, an approximately 100 m high step leads to the high plateau of La Vrine . The slope is crowned by limestone cliffs in various places and is only interrupted by the Col des Roches gorge . At 907 m, the highest point in Sombacour is reached on the La Vrine plateau. The entire area has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
Neighboring municipalities of Sombacour are Évillers and Bians-les-Usiers in the north, Dommartin in the east, Houtaud and Chaffois in the south and Chapelle-d'Huin and Septfontaines in the west.
history
The place name Sombacour is derived from the Latin words summa curtis (uppermost court). Since the 13th century Sombacour formed the center of the Usier rule, whose castle was on the promontory above the village. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 2002, Sombacour has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes Altitude 800, which comprises 11 villages .
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais was built from 1493 in the Gothic style. The Calvary with Stations of the Cross was built from 1895 to 1956. Ruins of the former medieval Usiers castle have been preserved.

With 641 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Sombacour is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 564 people), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Sombacour was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding, and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from the main road D72 (Pontarlier - Salins-les-Bains ) to Ouhans . There are other road connections with Chaffois and Chantrans .
