Dommartin is a French municipality with 710 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Dommartin is located at 806  m above sea level, about five kilometers northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , in the eastern part of the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne), on the Drugeon , south of the heights of the Côte du Fol.

The area of the 6.39 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The southeastern part of the area is taken up by the Arlier plateau, which is 810 m on average and is mostly covered by meadows. The Drugeon used to meander through this plain; today it is canalised and drains the area northeast to the Doubs . In the east, the municipality extends to the outskirts of Pontarlier. To the north, the community area extends over a steep slope onto the broad ridge of the Côte du Fol , which is almost entirely wooded. The highest point in Dommartin is reached here at 944 m.

Dommartin includes the La Côte settlement ( 850  m ) on the slope of the Côte du Fol on the edge of the Arlier plain. Neighboring municipalities of Dommartin are Sombacour and Bians-les-Usiers in the north, Vuillecin , Doubs and Pontarlier in the east and Houtaud in the south and west.

history

The place name is derived from the Latin name Domnus Martinus (Saint Martin). In the Middle Ages, Dommartin formed its own small rule. The population was decimated by a severe plague epidemic in 1636. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

St. Martin Church

The village church of Saint-Martin was built in the 17th century in the Gothic flamboyant style. The choir is flanked by two side chapels; the ship was restored in the 18th century. The furnishings include two remarkable statues from the 16th century. The Niai-Nion chapel at the foot of the Côte du Fol also dates from the mid-17th century.

With 710 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Dommartin is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (258 people were still counted in 1886), a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the early 1960s. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost tripled. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Dommartin was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, especially retail shops. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Pontarlier.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main D72 road from Pontarlier to Salins-les-Bains . There are other road connections with Vuillecin and Doubs.
