Vernierfontaine is a French municipality with 462 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vernierfontaine is located 724 m above sea level, six kilometers southwest of Valdahon and about 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic position on a slope slightly to the north on the plateau of Valdahon, the so-called first plateau of the Jura, northeast of the Loue valley system .
The area of the 13.28 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by the low relief high plateau of Valdahon, which is an average of 700 m. It is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land, partly also of forest, and rises slightly towards the southeast. At the height of Vernierfontaine, the highest point in the municipality is reached at 769 m. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the west, the municipality extends into the wooded area of the Bois de la Bouhard .
The neighboring municipalities of Vernierfontaine are:
- Fallerans in the north,
- Étray in the east,
- Les Premiers Sapins with Nods in the east and Chasnans in the south,
- Lavans-Vuillafans in the south,
- Voires and Guyans-Durnes to the west.
history
Vernierfontaine was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, the church and most of the village belonged to the Mouthier Monastery . Together with Franche-Comté , Vernierfontaine came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since 1998, Vernierfontaine has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Pierrefontaine-Vercel, which comprises 44 localities .
On January 1, 2009, the arrondissement membership of the municipality was changed. Previously belonging to the Arrondissement Besançon , all municipalities of the canton came to the Arrondissement Pontarlier.
Attractions
The Saint-André church was built in 1868 on the site of a previous medieval building. The bell tower was provided with a high onion dome and measured a total of 63 m. When repairs were necessary in 1911, however, it was reduced to its present size. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 462 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vernierfontaine is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (504 people were still counted in 1891), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Vernierfontaine was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) until well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road N57, which leads from Besançon to Pontarlier . Other road connections exist with Valdahon, Étray, Chasnans and Guyans-Durnes.
