Le barboux is a French municipality with 238 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Le Barboux is located at 937  m , eleven kilometers northeast of Morteau and about 9 kilometers west of the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the southwest of the high plateau of Maîche, at the northern foot of the mountain range of Mont Devoir north of the Doube valley .

The area of the 11.26 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Maîche, which is on average 930 m. It is mainly made up of meadows and pastureland, but also shows some smaller wooded areas ( Les Cornaix and Cerneux au Bœuf ). The slightly undulating surface is characterized by various hollows and drainage-free depressions with sinkholes . The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the northeast, the community soil extends to the heights of Pré Chaillot and La Borme ( 1001  m ). In the south, the high plateau is flanked by the wide ridge of Mont Devoir , on which the highest point of Le Barboux is reached at 1087 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this ridge forms an anticline of the Jura folds and is oriented in the south-west-north-east direction in accordance with the direction of the mountains in this region. It is bordered in the south by the Doubs valley, although the municipal area does not extend all the way down to the Doubs.

In addition to the actual village, Le Barboux also includes the hamlet of La Partie de Bise ( 962  m ) in a hollow at the northern foot of Mont Devoir and various individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Le Barboux are Le Russey in the north, Grand'Combe-des-Bois in the east, Villers-le-Lac in the south and La Chenalotte and Narbief in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Le Barboux belonged successively to the dominions of Réaumont and Vennes. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

On January 1, 2009 there was a change in the arrondissement membership of the municipality. Previously belonging to the arrondissement of Montbéliard , all municipalities of the canton came to the arrondissement of Pontarlier.

Attractions

The construction of the Saint-Renobert church in the Renaissance style began in 1517. The bell tower dates from the 19th century. The church is richly decorated , including statues from the 16th century and an altar from the 18th century. Scattered on the Jura heights are various farmhouses in the characteristic style of the Haut-Doubs, in particular the Les Lessus farm (17th century).

With 238 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Le Barboux is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (299 people were still counted in 1911), slight population growth has been recorded since the mid-1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Barboux was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D437 (Montbéliard-Morteau). Road connections exist with Narbief, Grand'Combe-des-Bois and Villers-le-Lac.
