Les Hôpitaux-Vieux is a French municipality with 450 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Hôpitaux-Vieux is located at 1032  m above sea level, about 13 kilometers south of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley in the headwaters of the Bief Bleu, at the western foot of the ridge of the Mont de l'Herba, near the Col de Jougne and the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 14.21 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The southwestern part of the area is taken up by the valley basin of Les Hôpitaux-Vieux, in which the Bief Bleu rises. It provides drainage to the southwest to the Rouge Bief and thus to the Doubs . In the extreme south-west, the communal soil extends to the Miroir hill ( 1114  m ).

The western boundary is the Combe du Grand Essart, which follows an important fault line across the Jura. From this valley furrow and the basin of Les Hôpitaux-Vieux, the municipal area extends east to the adjacent ridges of Crêt du Vourbey ( 1223  m ) and Mont de l'Herba , on which, at 1303 m, the highest point of Les Hôpitaux-Vieux reaches becomes. The Combe du Voirnon opens to the east to the plateau of L'Auberson, which is already in Switzerland . The area shows a loose structure of pastureland and forest areas. There is no surface running water because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

Neighboring municipalities of Les Hôpitaux-Vieux are Jougne and Les Hôpitaux-Neufs in the south, Touillon-et-Loutelet and Montperreux in the west, La Cluse-et-Mijoux and Les Fourgs in the north and the Swiss municipalities of Sainte-Croix and Baulmes in the east.

history

The origin of the current settlement goes back to a hospital that Jean de Chalon founded in 1282. In a document from 1393, a distinction was first made between Hôpital-Viel and the neighboring Hôpital-Neuf . Since the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Joux dominion, which controlled the traffic route from Pontarlier via the Col de Jougne to Switzerland. It was almost completely destroyed during the Thirty Years War . Together with Franche-Comté , Les Hôpitaux-Vieux came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Les Hôpitaux-Vieux is the administrative headquarters of the Lacs et Montagnes du Haut-Doubs municipal association founded in 2016 .

Attractions

The Sainte-Philomène chapel was built in 1835, while the parish hall (Mairie) dates from 1826. Various farmhouses in the traditional style of the Haut-Doubs have been preserved in the center and in the vicinity of the village.

With 450 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Les Hôpitaux-Vieux is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (322 people were still counted in 1886), there has been significant population growth again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Les Hôpitaux-Vieux was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many people in employment are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and as cross-border commuters in Switzerland.

Les Hôpitaux-Vieux has also benefited from tourism since the 1960s, when the area around Morond and Mont d'Or was developed into an important winter sports area in the French Jura. It is mainly geared towards winter tourism (especially cross-country skiing).

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N57, which leads from Pontarlier over the Col de Jougne to Vallorbe . The village center is now relieved of through traffic by a four-lane bypass road. Another road connection is with Les Fourgs.
