Houtaud is a French commune with 1,094 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Houtaud is 811  m above sea level, about four kilometers west-northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The former street-line village extends in the Jura , in the eastern part of the wide high plateau of Arlier (Pontarlier-Frasne), on the Drugeon , south of the heights of the Côte du Fol.

The area of ​​the 7.89 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The southern part of the area is occupied by the high plateau of Arlier, which lies at an average of 810 m and is mainly covered by meadows, partly also by moorland. The Drugeon used to meander through these bog areas, in which peat was cut until the Second World War. Today it is canalised and drains the area northeast to the Doubs . In the east, the municipality extends to the outskirts of Pontarlier. The municipal area extends north to the height of the Côte du Fol with a narrow strip . Here, at 901 m, Houtaud's highest point is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Houtaud are Sombacour in the north, Dommartin and Pontarlier in the east, Granges-Narboz in the south and Chaffois in the west.

history

Houtaud is first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Dommartin dominion. Together with Franche-Comté, Houtaud came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Saint-Antoine church

The village church of Saint-Antoine was built in 1703 and is characterized by its circular floor plan and a small central bell tower. At the edge of the heights of the Côte du Fol stands the Houtaud chapel.

With 1,094 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Houtaud is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 170 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than quadrupled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Houtaud was a village dominated by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community and a suburb of Pontarlier. Since the 1970s, a larger commercial and industrial zone developed on the road to Pontarlier. Today, Houtaud owns around 50 businesses, including trading companies, telecommunications and electrical engineering companies, numerous retail stores and large shopping centers. Many workers are also commuters who work mainly in Pontarlier. Houtaud has an equestrian center.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D72 road from Pontarlier to Salins-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Dommartin and Sombacour.
