Hauterive-la-Fresse is a French municipality with 225 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Hauterive-la-Fresse is located at 830 m , about eleven kilometers northeast of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a protrusion on the southern side of the Doubs valley , in the Val du Saugeais, at the northern foot of the Jura heights of the Montagne du Larmont , near the border with Switzerland .
The 7.46 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern border runs along the Doubs, which flows here in a relatively wide valley low to the northeast through the Val du Saugeais. From the course of the river the community area extends southwards to the height of Hauterive, which shows a loose structure of meadow and pasture land as well as forest, and over a Combe (longitudinal valley) to the Cerf . On this predominantly wooded ridge, which belongs to the chain system of the Montagne du Larmont, the highest elevation of Hauterive-la-Fresse is reached at 1210 m.
In addition to the Hauterive district, the scattered settlement community of Hauterive-la-Fresse includes various hamlets and individual farms, including:
- Le Mont d'Hauterive ( 981 m ) at the height of Hauterive above the Doubstal
- La Combe d'Hauterive ( 1044 m ) in a hollow at the height of Hauterive
- La Fresse ( 1108 m ) in a longitudinal hollow at the foot of the Cerf
Neighboring communities of Hauterive-la-Fresse are Les Alliés in the south, Maisons-du-Bois-Lièvremont in the west, Montflovin and Montbenoît in the north, Ville-du-Pont in the east and the Swiss communities La Brévine and Val-de-Travers in the southeast .
history
In the Middle Ages, Hauterive and La Fresse belonged to the monastic rule of Montbenoît. Together with Franche-Comté, both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today's twin parish was created in 1823 with the merger of the previously independent parishes of Hauterive and La Fresse.
population
With 225 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Hauterive-la-Fresse is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1881 there were still 271 people), there has been a significant increase in population since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Hauterive-la-Fresse was a village dominated by agriculture (cattle breeding and dairy farming) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small-scale businesses, mainly in cheese production and wood processing. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the departmental road that leads from Montbenoît to Les Alliés. Another road connection is with Les Gras.
