Gellin is a French municipality with 242 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Gellin is located 923 meters above sea level, about 21 kilometers southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The street-line village extends in the Jura , in the longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe, on the northern edge of the Doubs lowlands north of the Risoux , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of the 4.87 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the approximately two kilometer wide longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe, which forms a syncline in geological and tectonic terms . The Doubs meanders through a wide, partly muddy valley low and drains the area to the northeast. On its north side, the valley basin is flanked by the heights of the Bois de la Pila (up to 1066 meters) and Les Essarts (1010 meters). With a narrow strip, the community area extends south into the predominantly wooded area of Crêt Sapeau , on which the highest elevation of Gellin is reached at 1293 meters. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Neighboring municipalities of Gellin are Remoray-Boujeons and Brey-et-Maison-du-Bois in the north, Les Villedieu in the east and Sarrageois in the south and west.

With 242 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Gellin is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (222 people were still counted in 1886), there has been a significant increase in population since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Gellin was a village dominated by agriculture, in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D437 departmental road, which leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier. There are other road links with Jougne , Les Villedieu and Maison-du-Bois.
