Josef Reichl (politician, 1913)

Josef Reichl (born March 22, 1913 in Rudersdorf (Burgenland) , † February 22, 2003 in Fürstenfeld ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

Josef Reichl attended the Realgymnasium in Fürstenfeld and then completed a teaching degree for history and German as well as a degree in psychology , geography and oriental studies at the University of Vienna . Highest academic degree: Dr. phil.

Reichl joined the "socialist young front" at the age of 20 and later became a member of the SPÖ. During the Second World War, he served in the Wehrmacht from 1940 to 1945 and was a prisoner of war in Yugoslavia for a year and a half before returning to Fürstenfeld.

Reichl worked as a grammar school professor from 1948 to 1978, and in 1973 he became senior teacher.

In addition, Reichl wrote numerous books, including a detailed chronicle of the city of Fürstenfeld.

In 1972, Josef Reichl and Karl Ahrens proposed the melody of the theme of the fourth movement, " Ode to Joy " of Ludwig van Beethoven's ninth symphony, as the European anthem , which the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers then decided.

politics

Reichl was from 1950 to 1980 member of the municipal council of the city of Fürstenfeld and district party chairman of the SPÖ Fürstenfeld. From 1950 to 1956 Reichl was also Fürstenfeld's deputy mayor. In addition, from 1958 to 1978 he was regional education chairman of the SPÖ Styria. In the Austrian Parliament he was a member of the Bundesrat from 1953 to 1977 , and deputy chairman of the Bundesrat from July 1, 1977 to December 31, 1977. When Austria joined the Council of Europe in 1956, Reichl was actively involved in the negotiations. Personally and politically he advocated overcoming the antagonism between Christianity and social democracy and always tried to achieve a broad consensus between the SPÖ and the Christian-social ÖVP, the largest political camps in Austria.
