Brey-et-Maison-du- Bois is a French commune with a population of 102 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Brey-et-Maison-du-Bois is located at 914 m above sea level, about 19 km south-southwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The street line village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Ruisseau de Lhaut north of the longitudinal basin of the Val de Mouthe and west of the Mont de la Croix.
The area of the 6.18 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the partly moored valley low of the Ruisseau de Lhaut . This stream drains the area north to Lac de Remoray and thus to the Doubs . The valley is a fossilized river valley of the Doubs. It is flanked to the east by the height of Mont de la Croix (up to 975 m). To the west, the municipality extends over the heights of Buclées and Les Essarts ( 1015 m ) and the hollow of Maison-du-Bois to the ridge of the Bois de la Roche , on which the highest elevation of Brey-et- Maison-du-Bois is reached. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
The community consists of two districts:
- Le Brey ( 914 m ) in the Lhaut valley
- Maison-du-Bois ( 975 m ) in a hollow north of the Val de Mouthe
Neighboring municipalities of Brey-et-Maison-du-Bois are Remoray-Boujeons and Labergement-Sainte-Marie in the north, Rochejean in the east and Les Villedieu and Gellin in the south.
history
Brey is first mentioned in a document in 1241 under the name Bre . The place name probably goes back to the Gallic word bracu (moor). In the Middle Ages, Brey belonged to the Rochejean domain. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the time of the French Revolution , Le Brey has formed a twin community with Maison-du-Bois. Today Brey-et-Maison-du-Bois is a member of the Communauté de communes des Hauts du Doubs, which comprises 13 localities .
Attractions
The Maison-du-Bois chapel was built in 1497. The church of Le Brey dates from 1721.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Brey-et-Maisons-du-Bois was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D437 departmental road, which leads from Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux to Pontarlier. Another road connection is with Boujeons.
