The Source de la Loue

geography

Saint-Maurice Church

Ouhans is located at 634  m , about twelve kilometers north-northwest of the city of Pontarlier (as the crow flies). The cluster village extends in the Jura , deepened in a valley basin in the high plateau of Val d'Usiers, south of the karst source of the Loue , at the north foot of the Mont d'Usiers.

The area of the municipality of 15.85 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Ouhans basin. Several arid valleys that were once formed by the source streams of the Loue come together here. They are sunk into the Usiers high plateau, which lies at an average of 700  m and is mainly covered by meadows. North of Ouhans, the dry valley deepens and after a short time it reaches the basin in which the Loue rises with a heavily pouring karst spring at the foot of a roughly 100 m high rock face. The upper part of the Gorges de Nouailles , a striking, narrow and around 250 m deep canyon created by the Loue, also belongs to Ouhans.

To the east, the municipal area extends over the wooded slope of Mont d'Usiers ( 880  m ) to the wide ridge of Mont Pelé , an anticline of the Jura . Here the highest point of Ouhans is reached with 1045  m . Except for the uppermost section of the Loue, the entire area has no surface running water because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

Neighboring municipalities to Ouhans are Renédale , Mouthier-Haute-Pierre , Aubonne and Saint-Gorgon-Main in the north, La Chaux and Bugny in the east, Goux-les-Usiers in the south and Évillers in the west.

Notre-Dame des Anges chapel

history

In the Middle Ages, Ouhans belonged to the Renédale lordship. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Maurice was largely rebuilt in 1720 on the site of a previous building. The portal area and parts of the nave have been preserved from the former Gothic church from the 15th century. The Notre-Dame des Anges chapel is on a hill northeast of the village. In the old town center, some farmhouses in the traditional style of the Haut-Doubs from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. The Source de la Loue and the adjoining Gorges de Nouailles are among the most important natural sights of Franche-Comté .

With 376 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Ouhans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (502 people were still counted in 1881), the population has continued to grow steadily since the early 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Ouhans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture, especially dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a cheese dairy and several craft businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

Thanks to the proximity of the Source de la Loue, which attracts around 150,000 visitors annually, Ouhans now also benefits from tourism.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N57, which runs from Besançon to Pontarlier. There are other road connections with Levier and Goux-les-Usiers.
