Ponte a Rigo is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of San Casciano dei Bagni in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

Known as Borgo a Rigo in the Middle Ages, it is 9.7 km southwest of the main town of San Casciano dei Bagni and 65 km southeast of the provincial capital of Siena . The place lies on the rivers Rigo and Paglia , whereby the Rigo reaches the Rigo bridge (Ponte a Rigo) a few meters east of the village and then flows into the Paglia after about 500 meters. Here the Paglia forms the border with Latium , which lies to the south with the municipality of Proceno ( province of Viterbo ). This makes Ponte a Rigo the southernmost place in the Chiana Valley (Val di Chiana) and the southernmost place on the Via Francigena in Tuscany. Here several variants of the pilgrimage route meet again on the main path of the Via Cassia, such as the western Amiata variant via Bagni San Filippo , Abbadia San Salvatore and Piancastagnaio and the eastern variant via Radicofani and Celle sul Rigo (also part of San Casciano dei Bagni) . The place is 299 m and in 2001 had about 70 inhabitants. In 2017 there were 55 residents.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1074 as Borgo a Rigo. 24 years later, Lanfranco, Bishop of Chiusi , gave the place to the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata .
