Seveux is a village in the French community Seveux-Motey and a former municipality last 450 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2015) in the Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Seveux is located at an altitude of 203 m above sea level, 17 kilometers northeast of Gray and about 42 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The street village extends in the west of the department, in the valley of the Saône opposite Savoyeux , northwest of the wooded areas of the Bois de Saint-Gand .

The area of the 16.89 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The western and northern borders always run along the Saône, which here draws a large arch extending to the south and flows through an alluvial lowland about one kilometer wide . The flood plain averages 198 m. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the river loop at Seveux being cut off by a side canal. In the Seveux area, the river bed has therefore been left in a near-natural state.

From the course of the river, the community area extends eastward over the valley and a gently rising slope to the adjacent plateau. This consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and of tertiary deposits. Agricultural use predominates on the plateau, which lies at 220 m. The eastern boundary is in the Bois de la Roroye . To the south, the communal soil extends into the extensive wooded area of the Bois de Saint-Gand , with the southern border running in the area of the source of the Cabri (tributary of the Morte ). At 260 m, the highest point in Seveux is reached on a knoll in the Bois de Seveux .

In addition to the main town, the municipality of Seveux also included two hamlets:

  • La Vaivre (218 m) slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the Saône valley
  • Cambouin (240 m) in a cleared island in the Bois de Saint-Gand

Neighboring municipalities of Seveux were Membrey in the north, Vellexon-Queutrey-et-Vaudey and Saint-Gand in the east, La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain , Sainte-Reine and Beaujeu-Saint-Vallier-Pierrejux-et-Quitteur in the south and Mercey-sur -Saône , Motey-sur-Saône and Savoyeux to the west.

history

The municipality of Seveux was settled very early. The road from Besançon to Langres ran through the area . The Gallo-Roman town of Segobodium, mentioned on the Peutinger tablet, is located here. In various excavations, numerous finds from the Gallo-Roman period were discovered, including bones, pieces of jewelry, statuettes of Roman gods, tools and fragments of columns. Presumably an important workshop for processing iron and copper was located here.

The place name is made up of the Gaulish word components sego (force) and bodi (victory). Over time, the spelling changed from Sivoio to Sefui , Sevuy , Sivoy , Syvuez , Syveu and Sevoul to Seveux. In the Middle Ages Seveux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The place formed the center of its own rule, which has been documented since 1093. After the von Seveux family died out in 1321, Seveux came by inheritance to the Lords of Ray and later to the Marmier family. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The lordship was elevated to a marquisate in 1740. In the period that followed, there were three major fires, especially because the houses were still thatched at the time. Towards the end of the 18th century, the brick factory was founded, which for a long time formed an important economic basis for the population. Until its dissolution in 2019, Seveux was a member of the 42 municipalities community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières .

The municipality of Seveux merged with Motey-sur-Saône on January 1, 2019 to form the Commune nouvelle Seveux-Motey .

Attractions

The Saint-Laurent church was built in the 17th century and has an important tomb (13th century) of Othon de la Roche from the de Ray family. The large altar, which is now classified as a monument historique , dates from the time it was built . In front of the church is an obelisk (1870), which commemorates four soldiers killed in the Franco-Prussian War. Other sights include the lavoir from the 19th century, the square tower (13th and 14th centuries) of the former castle and on the road to La Vaivre another memorial (1889) for the victims of the Franco-Prussian War.

With 450 inhabitants most recently (as of January 1, 2015) Seveux was one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (965 people were still counted in 1906), after a long period of stagnation since 1990, a population decline has been recorded again.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Seveux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, a blast furnace, later a metalworking industry and a brick factory were important. Today there are various local small businesses, especially in the precision engineering and construction industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vaite to Oiselay-et-Grachaux. Further road connections exist with Vellexon and Beaujeu. Seveux has a train station on the Vesoul to Gray railway line .
