Motey-sur-Saone is a town in the French community Seveux-Motey and a former municipality last 29 inhabitants (1 January 2015) in the Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Motey-sur-Saône is located at an altitude of 202 m above sea level, 14 kilometers northeast of Gray and about 38 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, on the edge of the Saône valley , north of the Forêt de Belle Vaivre .

The 2.99 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The northern border always runs along the Saône, which here draws a large arch extending to the south and flows through an alluvial lowland approximately two kilometers wide . The valley floodplain averages 195 m. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the Savoyeux river loop being cut off by a side canal. In the Motey area, the banks have therefore been left in a natural state. From the course of the river, the community area extends southwards over the valley floor to the adjacent plateau. This consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the Upper Jurassic and of tertiary deposits. Agricultural use predominates on the plateau, which lies at 220 m. Further to the south, the communal soil extends into the extensive forest of the Forêt de Belle Vaivre . At 246 m, the highest point in Motey-sur-Saône is reached in this forest.

Neighboring communities of Motey-sur-Saône were Savoyeux in the north, Seveux in the east and south and Mercey-sur-Saône in the west.

history

Motey is believed to have originated from a monastery founded before the 11th century. The place name is derived from the Latin word monasterium (monastery). Over time, the spelling changed from Mostier and Mostix to Motey. In the Middle Ages Motey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Fouvent, who left the Saint-Martin church to the Bèze monastery in 1098. The lords of Beaujeu also acquired the Corneux monastery in Motey. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Motey-sur-Saône is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

The municipality of Motey-sur-Saône merged with Seveux on January 1, 2019 to form the Commune nouvelle Seveux-Motey .

Attractions

The Saint-Vorles church was built between 1776 and 1778 and has a crucifix from the 15th century. In the cemetery there is a forged Calvaire from 1733. The lavoir on the road to Mercey-sur-Saône dates from the 19th century and was once used as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 29 inhabitants most recently (as of January 1, 2015), Motey-sur-Saône was one of the smallest communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (98 people were still counted in 1891), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Motey-sur-Saône was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Gray to Vellexon. There are other road connections with Mercey-sur-Saône and Sainte-Reine.
