Port of Savoyeux on the Saone

Savoyeux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Savoyeux is located at an altitude of 210 m above sea level, 16 kilometers northeast of Gray and about 42 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, on a slightly elevated position on a bulging slope of the Saône opposite Seveux .

The area of the municipality of 6.14 km² covers a section of the central Saône valley. The eastern and southern borders always run along the Saône, which here draws a large arch extending to the south and flows through an alluvial lowland about one kilometer wide . The flood plain averages 198 m. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the river loop being cut off by the Savoyeux canal (with a tunnel under the foothills of the plateau). In the Savoyeux area, the river bed has therefore been left in a near-natural state.

The municipal area stretches from the course of the river over the valley floor to the height of Savoyeux. This forms the foothills of the plateau adjoining the Saône valley to the west. It consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic period . Agricultural use predominates on the plateau, which lies at 220 m. To the northwest, the communal soil extends into the forest area of the Grands Bois , where the highest point in Savoyeux is reached at 244 m.

The settlement of Port de Savoyeux (198 m) in the Saône valley belongs to Savoyeux . Neighboring municipalities of Savoyeux are Vaite and Membrey in the north, Seveux in the east, Motey-sur-Saône and Mercey-sur-Saône in the south and Autet in the west.

history

The municipality of Savoyeux was populated very early. The earliest evidence of man's presence comes from the Paleolithic . Towards the end of the Bronze Age there was a settlement here. Finds from a tumulus are dated to around 450 BC. Dated. The Gallic oppidum called Sabodium came in 58 BC. Under Roman rule. After that, a settlement existed until the 5th century thanks to its proximity to Segobodium (Seveux).

Savoyeux is documented around the year 1000. Over time, the spelling changed from Sevaou via Savoyeul and Savoyeulx to the current name. In the Middle Ages, Savoyeux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Savoyeux and Seveux belonged closely together until 1120, when two separate parishes were founded. After that, Savoyeux was owned by the lords of Autrey. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Savoyeux is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 villages .

With 210 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Savoyeux is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the number of inhabitants had decreased significantly during the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 483 people), a renewed increase in the population was recorded at the beginning of the 21st century.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Savoyeux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). A paper mill, which still exists today, but only employs around 20 people, has been important for economic life since the mid-19th century. There are also various local small businesses, mainly in the wood processing and precision engineering industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. Savoyeux is the location of a marina.

The village is away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from the departmental road from Dampierre-sur-Salon to Seveux. There are other road links with Membrey and Mercey-sur-Saône. Savoyeux has a station on the disused railway line from Vesoul to Gray.
