The area of the 4.11 km² municipal area covers a section of the middle Ognon Valley. The southern border runs along the Ognon, which extends here with an arc far to the south and flows through a lowland about one kilometer wide. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the alluvial plain , which averages 245 m, to the adjacent plateau. This consists of limestone layers from the Upper Jurassic , lies at around 280 m and is partly covered with arable land and meadow, partly with forest, especially the Bois du Franoi. The eastern border forms the Ruisseau de Bouhans, a right side stream of the Ognon. At 313 m, the highest point of Thiénans is reached on the plateau north of the village.

The hamlet of Montroz (250 m) in the valley of the Ognon belongs to Thiénans . Neighboring municipalities of Thiénans are Fontenois-lès-Montbozon in the north, Bouhans-lès-Montbozon in the east, Montagney-Servigney in the southeast and Montbozon in the south and west.

history

A noble family von Thiénans is documented in 1180. In the Middle Ages, Thiénans belonged to the county of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. At the time of the French Revolution, Montroz, first mentioned in 1267, was united with Thiénans. Since 2000, Thiénans has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon, which comprises 21 localities .

Attractions

The village church of Thiénans, which dates back to a medieval building from the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 18th century and has a tombstone of Guillaume which is dated to 1338. Only a few remains of the former Montroz Castle have survived.

With 93 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Thiénans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (149 people were still counted in 1896), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Thiénans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are very few jobs in the village. In the meantime, the place has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Montbozon to Esprels .
