Breurey-lès-Faverney is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Breurey-lès-Faverney is located at an altitude of 233 m above sea level, two kilometers southeast of Faverney and about 15 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on the southern edge of the wide valley plain of the Lanterne , on both sides of the Ruisseau la Creusotte at the northern foot of the heights of Breurey.

The area of the municipal area of 19.48 km² includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the lantern. The central part of the area is occupied by the basin of the Ruisseau la Creusotte , which provides drainage to the northwest to the Lanterne. In the north-west the parish soil extends into the wide alluvial lowland of the Lanterne. It lies at an average of 220 m and is around four kilometers wide. In the floodplain north of the village, in a former sand and gravel mining area, there are a number of ponds, some of which are designated as a nature reserve, and some are used for water sports.

To the east of the valley of the Ruisseau la Creusotte, there is a plateau made up of shell limestone from the Middle Triassic . It is subdivided by several hollows, with the valley of the Ruisseau de Courcelles marking the eastern boundary. This section is mainly used for agriculture.

A prominent terrain step of up to 150 m in height leads south to the heights of Breurey, which are made up of extensive forests ( Bois de Breurey , Bois de la Bannie ). At 415 m, the highest point in Breurey-lès-Faverney is reached at Chaumont . The plateau consists of an alternating layer of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). It is divided by the valley cuts of Ruisseau des Fourches and Bâtard (in the far south-east).

Neighboring municipalities of Breurey-lès-Faverney are Mersuay in the north, Équevilley and Le Val-Saint-Éloi in the east, Flagy , Auxon and Provenchère in the south and Fleurey-lès-Faverney and Faverney in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Breurey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rulership had been held by the Lords of Vesoul from the noble Faucogney family since the 10th century. In the 14th century the rule passed to the Vergy von Champlitte family. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. At the beginning of the 20th century, Breurey-lès-Faverney was connected to the public transport network by a tram. Operation on the line was discontinued in 1934 and replaced by a bus connection.

Attractions

The Saint-Laurent church was built between 1737 and 1757. The remarkable furnishings include paintings, statues and reliquary shrines, a richly carved altar and paneling from the 18th century, as well as various grave slabs. The former church was initially converted into a rectory and later into a residential building.

The town center is characterized by various houses, some of which are equipped with turrets and show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône. Also worth seeing is the Fontaine du Rondey of 1830, a Lavoir in atrium style with double peristyle . A little above the village is the Château Collot in the historicizing Louis XIII style in a large park. The Chapelle de l'Ermitage is located on the northwest slope of the heights of Breurey.

With 635 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Breurey-lès-Faverney is one of the smaller municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (989 people were still counted in 1881), population growth was recorded again from 1975 to 1990. Since then there have only been minor fluctuations.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Breurey-lès-Faverney was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small-scale businesses, especially in the construction and precision engineering sectors. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The water areas north of the village are used as a local recreation area and for water sports (leisure center).

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Faverney to La Villedieu-en-Fontenette. Further road connections exist with Mersuay and Provenchère.
