geography

Noidans-lès-Vesoul is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, about two and a half kilometers west-southwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in the Vesoul basin on the southern edge of the broad valley of the Durgeon , at the northern foot of the Bois de la Côte .

The area of the municipality of 8.64 km² includes a section in the area of the Vesoul basin. The northern border runs partly along the Durgeon, the eastern border is marked by its left side stream Ruisseau de la Fontaine au Diable . The Durgeon flows through an alluvial plain and provides drainage to the west to the Saône . The plain is on average 215 m and has a width of around three kilometers.

From the valley level the community area extends southward over a 150 m high, steep, wooded slope, the upper edge of which is marked by rocky outcrops and ledges in various places. A saddle leads south to the long depression of Andelarre (300 m). This is flanked by two wooded ridges, in the west by the Bois de Noidans (432 m), in the east by the Bois de la Côte , on which the highest point of Noidans-lès-Vesoul is reached at 434 m. While on the lower slope around Noidans calcareous and sandy-marl-like sediments of the lower Jurassic period (Lias) emerge, the mountain ranges consist of resistant limestone from the middle Jurassic period.

The settlements of Le Trembloi and La Vèze at the northern foot of the Bois de la Côte belong to Noidans-lès-Vesoul . Neighboring municipalities of Noidans-lès-Vesoul are Vaivre-et-Montoille and Vesoul in the north, Échenoz-la-Méline in the east, Andelarrot and Andelarre in the south and Chariez in the west.

In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Noidans formed a fiefdom that went to the Faucogney (Lords of Villersexel) in 1268. The villagers were granted certain freedoms in 1496. After several changes of ownership, Noidans came to the Lords of Grammont in 1554. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
