Mantoche is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Mantoche is located at an altitude of 195 m above sea level, six kilometers southwest of Gray and about 38 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Dijon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far west of the department, in the plain of Gray, on the western bank of the Saône .

The area of the 16.58 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The Saône flows here with large meanders through an approximately 3 km wide alluvial valley , which averages 190 m. It is canalised and developed into a waterway; below Mantoche there is a lock mechanism. The great loop of Mantoche is cut off by a side channel ( Dérivation d'Apremont ). The Saône and its side canal form the eastern and southern municipal boundaries. The northern boundary lies in the area of the Soufroide , a right tributary of the Saône. Agricultural use predominates in the valley floor.

From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the valley floodplain and a relatively gently rising slope, which is subdivided by various short valleys, down to the adjacent plateau. This consists of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic and the Tertiary . The plateau is predominantly forest-covered. On a knoll in the Bois de Mantoche the highest point of Mantoche is reached with 249 m. In the far west, the parish grounds extend into the valley of the Ruisseau d'Échalonge , which is dammed up here to form a long pond.

The hamlet of Passirey (197 m) in the Soufroide valley belongs to Mantoche . Neighboring municipalities of Mantoche are Nantilly in the north, Gray-la-Ville , Velet and Esmoulins in the east, Apremont and Essertenne-et-Cecey in the south and Autrey-lès-Gray and Poyans in the west.

history

The municipality of Mantoche was probably inhabited continuously since the early Neolithic . At Mantoche there were two fords to cross the Saône, which gave the locality a certain importance early on. Various finds from the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Age have been excavated. There is evidence of a settlement and the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa (with mosaics) from the 1st century AD.

The settlement of Mantoche was destroyed by the Hungarians in 947. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rulership was initially held by the lords of Autrey, and then by the Vergy family from the 13th century. Theuley monastery also owned land in Mantoche. In 1569 the village was affected by troops from the Duke of Zweibrücken. Together with Franche-Comté , Mantoche finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Since the beginning of 2008, Mantoche has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Quatre Vallées, comprising 14 localities .

Attractions

The single-nave village church of Mantoche was rebuilt from 1716 to 1730 and has a mighty bell tower. The Romanesque Saint-Nicolas side chapel of the previous medieval building from the 12th century was integrated into the new building . The rich interior includes a high altar (18th century), various statues from the 17th and 18th centuries and an image of the Madonna (18th century). The town center is characterized by numerous houses from the 16th to 18th centuries that show the traditional style of the Haute-Saône. Particularly noteworthy is the Maison Davadan with its renaissance facade . The castle, the oldest parts of which date from the 16th century, was extensively restored around 1770.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time Mantoche was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, particularly in the metalworking, precision engineering and transport industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the Gray area or in the agglomeration of Dijon.

Further road connections exist with Apremont and Nantilly. Mantoche has a train station on the Gray – Saint-Jean-de-Losne line to Saint-Jean-de-Losne .
