Montigny-lès-Vesoul is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Montigny-lès-Vesoul is located at an altitude of 220 m above sea level, about seven kilometers west of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, slightly elevated on the northern edge of the basin of the Durgeon , at the southern foot of Mont l'Essart.

This plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Middle Jurassic and the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). To the northeast, this plateau rises slightly to the predominantly wooded ridge of Mont l'Essart , on which the highest point of Montigny-lès-Vesoul is reached at 308 m.

history

Montigny is first mentioned in a document in 1213. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . In 1286 a Poor Clare ( Abbaye des Dames Nobles ) was founded at the instigation of Héloise de Joinville . This was damaged several times over the years: in 1356 and 1437 by the Grandes Compagnies and in 1595 by troops from Tremblecourt. Montigny itself was plundered and pillaged by French troops in 1477 and by troops of Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar during the Thirty Years War . As a result, Montigny was repopulated by a colony of settlers from Savoy . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Montigny-lès-Vesoul is a member of the 19 localities community association Communauté de communes de l'agglomération de Vesoul .

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Laurent was rebuilt in 1726 and extensively restored in 1860. It has rich furniture from the 18th century, including the high altar, as well as numerous tombstones. The Abbaye de Montigny-lès-Vesoul Poor Clare was rebuilt after a major fire in 1686 by the middle of the 18th century. The convent buildings form an impressive ensemble around the church, which was rebuilt in 1735 and houses a high altar from 1768. In the area of the church there are several crosses that are dated to the years 1592 and 1622.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montigny-lès-Vesoul was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Vesoul agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Port-sur-Saône to Vaivre-et-Montoille. Another road connection exists with Chariez.
