Cresancey is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cresancey is located at an altitude of 216 m above sea level, eight kilometers southeast of Gray and about 34 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the plain of Gray, in the valley of the Tenise on the southeast edge of the Forêt des Hauts Bois .

The area of the municipality of 9.60 km² comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape between the valley plains of Saône in the north and Ognon in the south. From east to west, the area is crossed by the Tenise valley, which drains the river into the Saône and is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau, which averages 235 m. It is subdivided by the valleys of various short side streams of the Tenise. The plateau is made up of sediments from the Tertiary and Upper Jurassic Periods and is partly used for agriculture and partly made up of forest. In the south, the municipality reaches into the Bois de la Fiolle , where the highest point of Cresancey is reached at 248 m. To the north of the village, the forest of the Forêt des Hauts Bois (communal forest of Gray) extends, in which there are also two fish ponds (privately owned). The northern border runs in the valley of the Dhuys, a left side stream of the Morthe .

Neighboring communities of Cresancey are Gray and Battrans in the north, Velesmes-Échevanne and Onay in the east, Champtonnay in the south and Noiron in the west.

history

Finds from the Bronze Age indicate a very early settlement of the area. Cresancey was first mentioned in a document in 1212, when the village church was subordinated to the Corneux monastery . In the Middle Ages, Cresancey belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the noble von Cresancey family, whose existence has been documented since 1274. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Étienne church was rebuilt in the 18th century and has remarkable furnishings . In front of the church is an iron cross (18th century).

The castle dates from the 19th century, but it has a medieval tower.

Also worth seeing is the lavoir , which once served as a wash house and cattle trough.

With 181 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Cresancey is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (306 people were still counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Cresancey was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D67 road from Gray to Besançon. Further road connections exist with Noiron and Échevanne.
