Buthiers Castle

Buthiers is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Buthiers is located at an altitude of 225 m above sea level, nine kilometers south-southwest of Rioz and about twelve kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department on the northern edge of the valley plain of the Ognon , near the mouth of the Buthiers, north of the ridge of the Fort de la Dame Blanche ( Grande Côte ).

The area of the 5.69 km² municipal area includes a section of the middle Ognon Valley. The southern border mostly runs along the Ognon. This flows here with several meanders through an alluvial plain , which has a width of about two kilometers and averages 220 m. The Buthiers stream of the same name flows from the northwest near Buthiers and is dammed into a pond (nature reserve) west of the village. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley floor into the open valley basin of the Buthiers. This hollow is flanked on both sides by wooded heights, which consist of an alternating layer of chalky and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period . At 310 m, the highest point in Buthiers is reached in the Forêt de Sorans .

The hamlet of Avouaye-Dessus (250 m) in a cleared island in the Buthiers valley belongs to Buthiers. Neighboring municipalities of Buthiers are Perrouse in the north, Mérey-Vieilley in the east, Bonnay in the south and Voray-sur-l'Ognon in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Buthiers belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The noble family Buthiers was first mentioned in writing in 1140. She was responsible for the local rule, which passed to the Lords of Scey in 1494. Together with Franche-Comté , Buthiers finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1805 the previously independent Avouay (1800: 54 inhabitants) was incorporated into Buthiers. Today Buthiers is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 towns .

Attractions

The village church of Buthiers was rebuilt in the 18th century. Most of the current construction of the castle dates from the 17th century and has a medieval keep (15th century) and two square towers. It stands in a large park with an orangery and a Chinese pavilion.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (244 people were still counted in 1891), strong population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Buthiers was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N57 that runs from Besançon to Vesoul . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 11 km away. Other road links exist with Cromary and Bonnay.
