Ouge is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Ouge is at an altitude of 340 m above sea level, five kilometers west-southwest of Vitrey-sur-Mance and about 39 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme northwest of the department, on a high plateau in the eastern foothills of the plateau of Langres, between the valleys of Mance in the north and Ougeotte in the south.

The area of the 13.49 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Langres plateau west of the upper Saône valley . The central part of the area is taken up by the high plateau of Ouge, which is an average of 340 m. It has a width of three kilometers and a length of four kilometers and is mainly used for agriculture. From a geological and tectonic point of view, this plateau consists of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). In the southwest the plateau is connected to the Fayl-Billot plateau.

The plateau is bordered in the north by the broad valley of the Mance, in the west by its tributary Ruisseau des Bruyères , which over time has sunk a deep valley into the plateau due to its erosive power. The steep slopes are mostly forested. In the south, the plateau is flanked by the erosion channels of the source streams of the Ougeotte. This is where the Bois du Châtelet forest is located . In the far south, on the plateau of La Quarte, the highest point of Ouge is reached at 383 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Ouge are Laferté-sur-Amance and Velles in the north, Vitrey-sur-Mance and Chauvirey-le-Châtel in the east, La Quarte and Fayl-Billot in the south and Pierremont-sur-Amance in the west.

history

Remains from Gallo-Roman times in the Bois du Châtelet indicate a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, Ouge belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . In the 10th century the place belonged to the possession of the Luxeuil monastery , after which it came to the rule of Chauvirey. During the Thirty Years War, Ouge was completely destroyed in 1636 and was then uninhabited for about seven years. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Remy church originally dates from the 13th century and is classified as a monument historique . It was partially rebuilt from 1832 to 1857. The furnishings date from the 18th century.

In the southwest of the village there is a calvary (18th century) with a columnar figure.

The castle, which was built in the 16th century and is flanked by two round towers, also has the status of a monument historique.

With 102 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Ouge is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century, the population decreased continuously (in 1886 there were still 580 people).

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Ouge was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Jussey to Fayl-Billot. Other road connections exist with Chauvirey-le-Châtel and Pierremont-sur-Amance.
