Velles is a French commune with 66 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Langres and the municipality association Pays de Chalindrey, de Vannier Amance et de la Région de Bourbonne-les-Bains, founded in 2016 .

Velles is located at an altitude of 240 m above sea level, 31 kilometers east of Langres and about 44 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme southwest of the department, on the northern edge of the Mance valley in the southeastern foothills of the Langres plateau .

The area of ​​the 4.29 km² municipal area covers a section of the Langres plateau northwest of the upper Saône valley . The southern municipal boundary runs along the Mance, which flows eastwards through an alluvial lowland about 1.5 kilometers wide . Immediately south of the Mance is the border with the Haute-Saône department . The floodplain lies at an average of 230 m and is mainly used for agriculture. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northwards along the side valleys of the Ruisseau de Vau and the Ruisseau de Guyonvelle to the adjacent high plateau, which reaches an average height of 320 m. Here, in the forest of Bois de la Boulaie , the highest point of Velles is reached at 333 m. From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy, marly and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias (Lower Jurassic).

Neighboring municipalities of Velles are Voisey in the north, Pisseloup in the east, Vitrey-sur-Mance in the south, Laferté-sur-Amance in the west and Guyonvelle in the northwest.

Until 1801 the community was still called Velle . Between 1972 and 1984 Velles was part of the municipality of Laferté-sur-Amance together with the neighboring town of Pisseloup .

Economy and Infrastructure

Velles is still today a predominantly agricultural community. There are six farms (grain cultivation, dairy farming, cattle breeding). coined village. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Some workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

A departmental road runs through the south of the commune of Velles and connects Blondefontaine with Anrosey . Another road connection exists with Voisey .
