Auberive is a French commune with 169 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Langres and the canton of Villegusien-le-Lac , previously it was the seat of the canton of Auberive . She is a member of the Auberive Vingeanne et Montsaugeonnais municipal association .

Attractions

The monastery Auberive (Alba Ripa) is a former Cistercian abbey , founded in 1136 by Bernard of Clairvaux, dissolved in 1791 and in 1856 became a women's prison. Today the building is used for exhibitions.

Personalities

Louise Michel , the “red maiden” of the Paris Commune , was imprisoned in Auberive Abbey - then a women's prison - before she was deported to New Caledonia .
