It belongs to the Arrondissement of Langres and the canton of Villegusien-le-Lac (until 2015 Prauthoy ). The inhabitants are called Rivièrois .

Rivière-les-Fosses is about 40 kilometers north-northeast of Dijon . Rivière-les-Fosses is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Le Val-d'Esnoms in the north and west, Le Montsaugeonnais in the east and Selongey and Boussenois in the south and south-east.
