Serqueux is a French commune with 413 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Langres .

geography

Serqueux is located about 35 kilometers northeast of Langres in the area of the plateau of the same name . On the northeastern edge of the municipality, the Saône tributary Apance rises in a wooded area ( Bois Communal de Serqueux ) at about 470 m above sea level.

history

A priory existed as early as 990 . Several plagues hit the community in the Middle Ages. Serqueux was completely devastated twice in the 17th century (in the Thirty Years War and in 1650). In a major fire in 1802, almost the entire village burned down. On October 19, 1917 there was an emergency landing of the Zeppelin L49 and in 1959 a fighter plane crashed in the municipality.

The mechanization of agriculture led to heavy emigration in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Serqueux was part of the Bailliage de Langres within the royal province of Champagne . The place belonged from 1793 to 1801 to the District Bourbonne. Also from 1793 to 1801 to the canton of Sergneux and since 1801 to the canton of Bourbonne-les-Bains . Between 1790 and 1801 the community was named Sergneux and was the canton capital. Since then it has had its current name.
