The Auberive Monastery (Alba Ripa) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Auberive in the Haute-Marne department , Grand Est region , in France . It is located around 27 km southwest of Langres an der Aube near its source.

history

The monastery was founded in 1136 by Bernhard von Clairvaux and was the 24th daughter monastery of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . It owned eleven Grangien , a wine-growing business, metal industry and a salt exploitation in Lons-le-Saunier . In 1519 it fell into the coming years .

During the French Revolution , the abbey was dissolved and the buildings were bought by the industrialist Abel François Nicolas Caroillon de Vandeul (1746-1813) - he was married to Marie-Angélique Diderot (1753-1824), the daughter of Denis Diderot . In 1856 the monastery was converted into a women's prison. Benedictine monks moved in in 1930 and Cistercians again in 1954 . From 1960 to 2004 the monastery served as a holiday colony. Now it will u. a. used for exhibition purposes.

Buildings and plant

The buildings were rebuilt around 1750. From the 17th century cloister to the north of the church there are still three wings with the chapter house with Gothic vaults. A water mill has also been preserved. Of the 12th century church, which was demolished at the end of the 18th century, only the flat choir vaulted with a pointed barrel with two rows of arched windows and a small oculus remains .
