Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange is located at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, three kilometers north-northeast of Gy and about 26 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, north of the course of the Morte river in the Gy plain, northwest of the heights of the Monts de Gy .
The area of the 7.13 km² municipal area comprises a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The southern border mostly runs along the Morte, which provides drainage to the west to the Saône. The wide valley level lies at an average of 205 m and has fertile alluvial soils , which are used for agriculture. Only a very small proportion in the area of the village of Vellefrange is south of the Morte. From the course of the Morte river, the community area extends northward into the poorly reliefed landscape of the Petits Bois de Gy , which is made up of tertiary deposits. At 261 m, the highest point in Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange is reached here.
The double municipality consists of the localities Vellefrey (205 m, north of the Morte) and Vellefrange (205 m, south of the Morte). Neighboring municipalities of Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange are La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain in the north, Vantoux-et-Longevelle in the east, Bucey-lès-Gy and Gy in the south and Citey and Angirey in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Vellefrey and Vellefrange belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1806, Vellefrey and Vellefrange merged to form today's double parish. Today Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, which comprises 20 localities . The parish does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Bucey-lès-Gy.
Attractions
The castle in Vellefrey was built in the 18th century according to plans by the architect Colombot. Also in Vellefrey is a covered lavoir from the 19th century, which used to be a fountain, wash house and cattle trough.

With 121 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (190 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations were registered until 1990. Since then there has been a significant increase in population again.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vellefrey-et-Vellefrange was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The place is off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D474, which leads from Gray via Gy to Vesoul . There are other road connections with Bucey-lès-Gy, Citey and Longevelle.
