Échenoz-la-Méline is a French commune in the department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the Vesoul agglomeration.

geography

Échenoz-la-Méline is located at an altitude of 240 m above sea level, about two and a half kilometers southwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, in a basin on the southern edge of the Vesoul basin, between the heights of the Bois des Breuleux to the west and Mont Cita to the east.

The area of the 8.09 km² large municipality includes a section in the area of the Vesoul basin. The central part of the area is occupied by the Échenoz basin, which is open to the north. It has a width of about one kilometer and is drained through the Ruisseau de la Fontaine au Diable (also Ruisseau de la Méline ) to the Durgeon . To the north, the area extends into the alluvial plain of the Durgeon near Vesoul. This level is on average at 215 m.

The Échenoz basin is surrounded on three sides by steep slopes, the upper edge of which is marked in various places by rock towers (Roches des 12 Apôtres) , rocky outcrops and protrusions. There are several caves in this area, in particular the Grotte de la Baume and the Grotte de Solborde . The steep slopes lead to the plateaus of the hilly landscape between the valleys of Saône and Ognon , which are partly wooded, partly with arable and meadow land. To the west of Échenoz the border runs over the height of the Bois des Breuleux (434 m), to the east over the plateau of Mont Cita (386 m). At 447 m, the highest elevation of Échenoz-la-Méline is reached in the Bois de Maurogeux . In the far south, the Grand Bois de Vellefaux forms the demarcation.

While calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the lower Jurassic period (Lias) emerge on the lower slope around Échenoz , the mountain ranges consist of resistant limestone from the middle Jurassic period.

Echenoz-la-Méline includes the settlements of Pont-lès-Vesoul (225 m) in the Durgeon basin on the outskirts of Vesoul and La Providence (320 m) at the height east of the basin of Échenoz. Neighboring municipalities of Échenoz-la-Méline are Vesoul in the north, Navenne and La Demie in the east, Vallerois-Lorioz in the south and Andelarrot and Noidans-lès-Vesoul in the west.

history

The area of Échenoz can look back on a very long history of settlement. The earliest evidence of man's presence comes from the Paleolithic . Bones and tools from this period have been found in the Grotte de la Baume. Excavations on the plateau of Mont Cita (also Camp de César ) uncovered the remains of a Bronze Age settlement. Coins from Roman times and finds from the Merovingian period suggest that this place was continuously inhabited.

Échenoz is first mentioned in 1174 under the name Escheno-la-Melinam . In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Until 1766, Échenoz belonged to the parish of Pont-lès-Vesoul, which is now part of the municipality. The original church was located here, which no longer exists. Today Échenoz-la-Méline is a member of the 19 localities community association Communauté de communes de l'agglomération de Vesoul .

Attractions

The Saint-Martin church was built in 1774 and has a statue of Saint Anne from the 16th century. The Notre-Dame de Solborde chapel also features a statue from the 16th century. In the village square of Échenoz there is a lavoir that was created as a fountain in 1833, redesigned in 1906 and roofed over in 1910.

With 3231 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Échenoz-la-Méline is one of the larger municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had been around 1000 to 1200 for a long time in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the first strong growth was recorded between 1920 and 1930. During this time, the population has almost doubled. A period of stagnation was followed by another population growth from 1962 to 1975. A continuous slow decrease in population was then observed. Since 1990 the number of inhabitants has been growing again. Today, the settlement area of Échenoz-la-Méline has almost completely merged with those of Vesoul, Noidans-lès-Vesoul and Navenne.

Economy and Infrastructure

Up until the 20th century, Échenoz-la-Méline was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (agriculture, viticulture and cattle breeding). In contrast to the other municipalities of the Vesoul agglomeration, no large industrial and commercial zones were created in Échenoz-la-Méline. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses here, especially in the building and heating industry, as well as service companies and retail businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the other villages of the Vesoul agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is connected to the national road network with the main roads N19 ( Belfort - Vesoul - Langres ) and N57 (Vesoul - Besançon ). There are other road connections with Noidans-lès-Vesoul and Velleguindry. Échenoz-la-Méline is connected to the city of Vesoul by a bus line.
