Charmes-Saint-Valbert is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Charmes-Saint-Valbert is located at an altitude of 263 m above sea level, 14 kilometers west of Combeaufontaine and about 35 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the undulating landscape on the southeast edge of the Langres plateau, in the Rigotte valley, at the northwest foot of the Montagne de la Roche.

The area of ​​the exactly 5 km² large municipal area comprises a section in the area of ​​the plateau northwest of the Saône valley . From northeast to southwest, the area is crossed by the Rigotte valley, which drains the river into the Saône. The flood plain averages 260 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer. The valley is flanked on its southeast side by the height of the Bois du Buisson Brûlé (331 m), the northernmost end of the Montagne de la Roche. The valley of the Ruisseau de la Chapelle and its side stream Ruisseau des Ongles flows from the north near Chamres-Saint-Valbert . The area extends into these valleys as well as the adjacent heights of the Langres plateau. At 380 m, the highest point in Charmes-Saint-Valbert is reached on the edge of the Grands Bois . From a geological point of view, the subsoil consists of sedimentary rocks from the Lias ( Lower Jura ), while the Montagne de la Roche is mainly made up of limestone from the Middle Jura .

The neighboring communities of Charmes-Saint-Valbert are Pressigny in the west and north, Molay in the east and Bourguignon-lès-Morey in the south.

history

Finds from Gallo-Roman times indicate an early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, Charmes belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The priory of Charmes was under the Luxeuil monastery . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Charmes-Saint-Valbert is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen, which comprises 17 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Charmes-Saint-Valbert was rebuilt in the 19th century. It houses rich furnishings , including a crucifix from the 17th century and statues from the 18th century. There is a stone cross in the cemetery which is dated 1634.

A little outside the village is the Saint-Valbert spring, the water of which is said to have healing powers for eye diseases.

With 38 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Charmes-Saint-Valbert is one of the smallest municipalities in the Haute-Saône department. During the entire 20th century, there was a significant population decline (222 people were still counted in 1891).

Economy and Infrastructure

Charmes-Saint-Valbert is still a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, viticulture, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. Some workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfare on a department road that leads from Pierrecourt to Malvillers . Another road connection exists with Pressigny.
