Velesmes-Échevanne is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Velesmes-Échevanne is located at an altitude of 204 m above sea level, nine kilometers east-southeast of Gray and about 32 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the basin of the Saône , in the hollow of the Teuillot stream on the eastern edge of the Bois de Belle-Combe.
The area of the 22.11 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . The central part of the area is taken from south to north by the valley basin of the Teuillot . This rises in the far south of the area in the Bois de Grilley and drains the area to the Morte . The Teuillot basin is flanked on both sides by a plateau that averages 220 m. It is made up of sediments that date back to the Tertiary and Upper Jurassic periods . The plateau is mainly used for agriculture, but there are also larger forest areas. In the Bois de Grilley, the highest point of Velesmes-Échevanne is reached at 251 m. To the west, the municipality extends into the extensive wooded area of the Bois de Belle-Combe (243 m). The western boundary runs partly along the Dhuys brook . In the north the Morte forms the natural border. It flows to the west through a valley that is more than a kilometer wide and drains the entire area to the Saône.
The double community consists of the village of Velesmes (204 m) on the Teuillot and the hamlet of Échevanne (210 m) in a cleared island in the Bois de Belle-Combe in the catchment area of the Dhuys. Neighboring municipalities of Velesmes-Échevanne are Saint-Broing in the north, Saint-Loup-Nantouard and Villefrancon in the east, Velloreille-lès-Choye and Onay in the south and Cresancey , Battrans and Ancier in the west.
history
The remains of a Merovingian burial ground indicate an early settlement in the municipality. Velesmes is first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Échevanne has also been documented since 1153 and belonged to a local noble family. In the Middle Ages, both villages belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . Velesmes shared the fate of the nearby Corneux monastery . Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1973, Velesmes and Échevanne (1968: 26 inhabitants) merged to form today's double municipality.
Attractions
The Church of Velesmes was rebuilt in 1860, including the bell tower of the previous building from 1636. Its foundation comes from the first village church from the 13th century. The church is home to rich interiors, including a 17th century crucifix, 18th century statuettes and various grave slabs. A hermitage founded in 1635 has been converted into a farm. Other sights of Velesmes include two lavoirs, the roof of which is supported by numerous columns. A mansion in Échevanne dates from the 19th century and was built on the foundations of the former castle.

Today there are various local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in Gray and in the other larger localities in the area.
