Vernois-sur-Mance is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vernois-sur-Mance is located at an altitude of 230 m above sea level, four kilometers north-northeast of Vitrey-sur-Mance and about 37 kilometers northwest of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme north-west of the department, on the northern edge of the Mance valley , at the foot of the Mieillères in the eastern foothills of the Langres plateau .

The area of ​​the 8.03 km² large municipality covers a section of the plateau of Langres west of the upper Saône valley . The southern border runs partly along the Mance, which flows eastwards through an alluvial lowland about two kilometers wide . The floodplain lies at an average of 225 m and is mainly used for agriculture. From the course of the river, the community area extends northwards over the valley floodplain and a roughly 100 m high steep slope to the adjacent high plateau, which reaches an average height of 340 m. It is subdivided by various erosion valleys and is partly made up of arable and meadow land, partly with forest. To the west of Vernois is the plateau-like projection of Les Mieillères (320 m). To the north, the area extends to the edge of the Bois de Neuvelle . With 374 m, the highest point of Vernois-sur-Mance is reached on this plateau. The communal soil extends with a narrow strip south of the Mance into the erosion valley of the Ruisseau de la Perche and the plateau of Gircourt (up to 311 m). From a geological and tectonic point of view, the terrain consists of alternating layers of sandy, marly and calcareous sediments, which were mainly deposited during the Lias (Lower Jurassic).

Neighboring municipalities of Vernois-sur-Mance are Voisey and Neuvelle-lès-Voisey in the north, Rosières-sur-Mance in the east, Vitrey-sur-Mance in the south and Betoncourt-sur-Mance in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Vernois belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of ​​the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the lords of La Rochelle. These leaving in 1149 the monastery Cherlieu the farms Bichecourt and Gircourt as granges . In the 14th century the entire village came into the possession of the monastery and remained dependent on it until the French Revolution in 1789. Together with the Franche-Comté , Vernois finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. With the opening of the railway line from Vesoul to Langres, the place was connected to the French railway network in 1858. Today Vernois-sur-Mance is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Jusséen, which comprises 17 localities .

Notre-Dame de la Nativité church

Notre-Dame de la Nativité church was built in 1733 in classical style and has an imperial style bell tower. The interior includes rich furniture from the time it was built. In front of the church are two centuries-old linden trees. On the church square is a round fountain (18th century) with a small portico in a style based on antiquity.

With 146 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vernois-sur-Mance is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (592 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vernois-sur-Mance was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing, viticulture and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. Today there are some local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The place is off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Vitrey-sur-Mance to Blondefontaine . Further road connections exist with Rosières-sur-Mance, Betoncourt-sur-Mance and Vaux-la-Douce. The station has now been closed.
