Chemilly is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chemilly is located at an altitude of 215 m above sea level, 4 km southeast of Scey-sur-Saône-et-Saint-Albin and about 10 km west of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the central part of the department, slightly elevated on the southern edge of the Saône Valley , near the confluence of the Durgeon and the Saône.

The area of the 3.77 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The northern border always runs along the Saône, which here draws an arc extending to the southeast. The alluvial valley of the Saône averages 207 m and is about two kilometers wide. The river has been developed into a waterway, with the loop at Chemilly being cut off by a side canal. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the valley floor of the lower Durgeon, which flows into the Saône at Chemilly. The fertile soils of the valley floor are mainly used for agriculture.

From the course of the Saône river, the community area extends southward over a steep, around 30 m high impact slope onto the adjacent plateau. This plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the upper Jurassic period . It is subdivided by several short valley niches that open towards the Saône or the Durgeon. The plateau is covered with forest: Bois du Couvent and Bois des Rompeux. At 264 m, the highest point in Chemilly is reached on a hill in the Bois du Couvent.

Neighboring communities of Chemilly are Ferrières-lès-Scey in the north, Vauchoux in the east, Pontcey and Aroz in the south and Chassey-lès-Scey in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Chemilly belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The rule of Chemilly has been documented since 1255 and passed to the noble Andelot family in 1550. The castle and the village were repeatedly affected by wars: in 1480 by the troops of Charles d'Amboise, in 1595 by those of Tremblecourt and finally in 1636 during the Thirty Years' War. Together with Franche-Comté , Chemilly finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

Most of the current buildings in Chemilly Castle date from the 19th century. The oldest parts are the keep (13th and 14th centuries) and remains of the former castle wall. A stone bridge from the 18th century, on which the statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands , leads across the Durgeon .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chemilly was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside of the primary sector there are few jobs in town. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Port-sur-Saône to Pontcey.
