geography
Étrelles-et-la-Montbleuse is located at an altitude of 265 m above sea level, seven kilometers north-northeast of Gy and about 28 kilometers north-northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southwest of the department, in the Saône basin on a hill east of the Petite Morte .
The area of the 6.26 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape southeast of the Saône . From the southeast to the northwest, the area is crossed by the wide valley of the Petite Morte , which provides drainage over the Cabri to the Morte . The valley level lies at an average of 240 m and has fertile alluvial soils that are used for agriculture. The lowlands are flanked by a maximum of 30 m higher heights, which are made up of tertiary deposits. At 282 m, Étrelles is the highest point in the municipality. With a narrow tip, the municipal area extends northward into the extensive forest of the Bois de Saint-Gand .
The double municipality consists of the localities Étrelles (265 m) on the hill east of the Petite Morte and La Montbleuse (230 m) on the southern edge of the Bois de Saint-Gand. Neighboring municipalities of Étrelles-et-la-Montbleuse are La Vernotte in the north, Frasne-le-Château in the east, Villers-Chemin-et-Mont-lès-Étrelles and Vantoux-et-Longevelle in the south and La Chapelle-Saint-Quillain and Saint-Gand to the west.
history
Finds of tools (flint) from prehistoric times indicate a very early settlement of the municipality. The Roman road from Besançon to Langres also ran through the area. Étrelles is first mentioned in a document in 1092. In the Middle Ages, Étrelles and La Montbleuse belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The lords of Frasne held local rule. Together with Franche-Comté , both villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1806, Étrelles and La Montbleuse merged to form what is now the twin community. Since 2007, Étrelles-et-la-Montbleuse has been a member of the Communauté de communes des Monts de Gy, which comprises 20 localities .
