Rioz, the townscape

Rioz is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Rioz in the arrondissement of Vesoul and the administrative seat of the communal association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais .

geography

Rioz is located at an altitude of 264 m above sea level, about halfway between Vesoul and Besançon , 21 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department, on the plateau north of the river valley of the Ognon on the upper Buthiers, between the extensive forest areas Forêt de Sorans in the west and Grands Bois in the northeast.

The area of the 17.20 km² municipal area comprises a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Ognon in the south and Saône in the north-west. The central part of the area is occupied by the Rioz plateau, which is an average of 280 m. It consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period . The plateau is mostly made up of arable and meadow land. It is drained south to the Ognon by the Buthiers , which rises northeast of the village. The stream is dammed up to two fish ponds north of the village.

To the west, the community area extends into the forests of Bois de la Hye , Bois de la Charrière (up to 365 m) and Forêt de Sorans . In the north, a narrow tip extends over a gently rising slope to the level of the Bois des Rêpes , where the highest elevation in Rioz is reached at 402 m. To the east of Rioz are the forests of the Bois d'Anthon . The settlements Anthon and Dournon together form an exclave that includes a valley basin on the southern edge of the Grands Bois .

In addition to the actual place, three settlements belong to Rioz:

  • Anthon (278 m) in a hollow on the southern edge of the heights of the Grands Bois
  • Dournon (285 m) in a valley basin on the southern edge of the heights of the Grands Bois
  • Les Fontenis (302 m) on the Rioz plateau on the southern edge of the Bois des Rêpes

Neighboring municipalities of Rioz are Hyet , La Malachère and Quenoche in the north, Traitiéfontaine , Ruhans and Cirey in the east, Neuvelle-lès-Cromary in the south and Trésilley in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and various finds indicate that the municipality of Rioz was settled very early. In the Middle Ages, Rioz belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The local rule was incumbent on the barony of Fondremand . During the Thirty Years War Rioz was badly affected. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

A change of area occurred in 1807 when the previously independent communities Anthon (1806: 143 inhabitants) and Dournon (1806: 69 inhabitants) were incorporated into Rioz. In the 19th century, Rioz gained national importance thanks to its stoneware factory. With the incorporation of Les Fontenis (1968: 39 inhabitants), another area change was made in 1973. Today Rioz is the administrative seat of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais comprising 33 villages .

Attractions

The village church of Rioz was rebuilt in the 18th century. Its tower has the typical Franche-Comté dome . The remarkable furnishings , which also date from this period, include the pulpit, the altar and the statue of St. Christopher .

The lavoir , a former wash house, well and cattle trough, was built in 1833. The Saint-Roch chapel (19th century) stands in the open field north of Rioz.

population

With 2270 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Rioz is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1,100 people were still counted in 1891), an increase in population was recorded in a first phase at the beginning of the 1970s. After a period of stagnation, population growth began again in 1990. Since then the population has almost doubled.

Vivid expressions of the dynamic population growth are the continuously expanding settlements with small single-family houses in the south and the likewise steadily growing industrial areas in the north.

Economy and Infrastructure

Rioz used to be a predominantly agricultural (arable, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry village. However, trade and industry acquired an important role early on in the place on the road from Besançon to Vesoul. The Buthiers' hydropower was previously used to operate two mills.

Today Rioz performs central local functions for the surrounding area. There are various retail and service companies for daily needs. In recent decades, a commercial and industrial zone has emerged, especially on the northern outskirts. Metal processing, precision mechanics, construction and transport companies have settled here. Many workers are also commuters who work in Vesoul and the Besançon agglomeration. The hamlet settlements are still predominantly agricultural. Rioz has a college and laboratory for milk analysis. It is the location of a campsite and has a large outdoor pool.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N57, which leads from Besançon to Vesoul. Rioz is relieved of through traffic by a bypass. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 19 km away. Other road connections exist with Loulans-Verchamp , Traitiéfontaine, Moncey , Montarloz-lès-Rioz and Trésilley.

Culture

The Carnival of Rioz, which takes place at the beginning of April, is known beyond the region.
