Vereux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vereux is located at an altitude of 200 m above sea level, ten kilometers northeast of Gray and about 43 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, in the valley west of the Saône .

The area of the 9.02 km² large municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The eastern border always runs along the Saône, which flows south through an alluvial lowland about two kilometers wide . The valley floodplain averages 195 m. The river has been developed into a waterway, with a canal running parallel to the Saône in the Vereux area, so that the course of the river is preserved here in a near-natural state. From the course of the river, the community area stretches westward over the valley and over a 30 m high, steep slope to the adjacent plateau. This consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic and lies at 240 m. Agricultural use predominates on the plateau, but there are also some forest areas. At 253 m, the highest point of Vereux is reached northwest of the village. In the far west the area extends into the forest of the Bois de Vereux .

The La Résie settlement (201 m) in the Saône valley belongs to Vereux . Neighboring municipalities of Vereux are Montot , Denèvre and Dampierre-sur-Salon in the north, Autet and Beaujeu-Saint-Vallier-Pierrejux-et-Quitteur in the east, Montureux-et-Prantigny in the south and Oyrières in the west.

history

Remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement area and aqueducts indicate an early settlement of the municipality. 12 graves from the Merovingian period were discovered which contained numerous grave goods. The place name changed over the course of time from Apud Verum via Veruz , Vereul and Vereulx to today's Vereux. In the Middle Ages, Vereux was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The local rule was incumbent on the Lords of Beaujeu, after which there was a longer period of changing ownership. The village was devastated during the Protestant invasion under the Duke of Zweibrücken in 1569. Together with Franche-Comté , Vereux finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Vereux is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Léger church was rebuilt in the 18th century. The remarkable features include a marble pulpit, stucco altars from the 18th century, furniture and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In an elevated position above the village there is a mansion from the 18th century.

The lavoir , which once served as a wash house and cattle trough, has been restored.

With 227 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Vereux is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1891 there were still 365 people), population growth was recorded again during the 1970s. Since then there have only been relatively minor fluctuations.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vereux was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The Saône's hydropower was previously used to power mills. Today there are some local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Gray to Combeaufontaine . Other road connections exist with Oyrières and Montot.
