Roche-et-Raucourt is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Roche-et-Raucourt is located at an altitude of 212 m above sea level, seven kilometers north-northeast of Dampierre-sur-Salon and about 49 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The double community extends in the west of the department, in the plateau landscape northwest of the Saône valley , in the valley on both sides of the Vannon .

The area of the 13.38 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of the plateau north of the Saône valley. From north-west to south-east, the area is crossed by the Vannon valley, which drains the river into the Saône. The floodplain through which the river meanders averages 210 m and is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The valley is flanked on both sides by a plateau that reaches an average height of 240 m. This plateau consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly sediments from the middle and upper Jurassic period . Agricultural use predominates on the plateau, but there are also larger areas of forest, especially in the area of the municipal boundaries. To the south, the municipal soil extends into the Bois de Roche , which belongs to the extensive forest area of the Forêt de Dampierre . The Roche Plateau extends north of the Vannon Valley. Here, on the hill of Champ Gauffard, at 264 m, the highest point in Roche-et-Raucourt is reached. The area extends further north into the valley of the Bonde (left tributary of the Vannon) and to the edge of the Bois de Fouvent .

The double community consists of the following districts:

  • Roche (212 m) in the Vannon Valley
  • Raucourt (224 m) in the valley of the Bonde

Neighboring municipalities of Roche-et-Raucourt are Francourt in the north, Volon in the east, Brotte-lès-Ray , Vaite and Dampierre-sur-Salon in the south and Fouvent-Saint-Andoche in the west.

history

A burial ground from the Merovingian period indicates an early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages Roche and Raucourt belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was always held by the lords of Fouvent . During the Thirty Years' War, the villages were badly affected in 1636. Roche and Fouvent belonged to the Champagne region until 1790. In 1806 Roche (1800: 426 inhabitants) and Raucourt (1800: 105 inhabitants) merged to form a double community. Today Roche-et-Raucourt is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

Attractions

Fontaine Saint-Didier

In Roche is the Saint-Didier church, which was rebuilt in 1765 and extensively restored in 1862. It is classified as a monument historique . The rich furnishings include the main altar and numerous statues from the 17th century. Outside the village is the Notre-Dame-des-Malades chapel from 1729. Other sights of Roche include the round fountain Fontaine Saint-Didier, the stone bridge over the Vannon and the lavoir, which once served as a washhouse and cattle trough.

Raucourt has two chapels: the Saint-Claude chapel and the Saint-Roch chapel (both from the 16th century). The former mansion of the Grachaux family with a square tower dates back to the 15th century and was used as a farm until 1987 after the revolution and is now privately owned.

With 160 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Roche-et-Raucourt is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (507 people were still counted in 1881), only relatively small fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Roche-et-Raucourt was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Today there are some local small businesses, especially in the wood processing and construction industries. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares near a department road that leads from Vaite to Pierrecourt . Other road connections exist with Fouvent, La Roche-Morey , Francourt, Brotte-lès-Ray and Dampierre-sur-Salon.
