Membrey is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Membrey is located at an altitude of 204 m above sea level, 19 kilometers northeast of Gray and about 46 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the west of the department, on a slightly elevated position on the eastern edge of the Vannon , opposite Vaite , north of the Saône valley .

The area of the 11.01 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Saône valley. The southern border always runs along the Saône, which flows here with several meanders to the southwest through an alluvial lowland about two kilometers wide . The flood plain averages 198 m. The river has been developed into a waterway and canalised in the Membrey area.

The central part of the area is taken up by the one kilometer wide flood plain of the Vannon. On both sides, the valley is flanked by around 30 m high steep slopes that lead to the adjacent plateaus. They consist of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments from the Upper Jurassic period . Agricultural use predominates both in the valley and on the plateau, which is at 235 m. To the northeast, the communal soil extends into the forest area Le Grand Poix , in which the highest elevation of Membrey is reached at 251 m. The eastern boundary is the Gourgeonne valley , which flows into the Saône a little above the Vannon.

Membrey includes the La Côte settlement (205 m) on the western edge of the Vannon valley. Neighboring municipalities of Membrey are Brotte-lès-Ray in the north, Tincey-et-Pontrebeau , Recologne and Vellexon-Queutrey-et-Vaudey in the east, Seveux and Savoyeux in the south and Vaite in the west.

history

The municipality of Membrey was populated very early. Numerous traces from Roman times were found during excavations between 1838 and 1841. To the south-east of the village was a Roman estate, which probably consisted of more than 60 rooms and was about 100 m long. Today only drawings are evidence of the former mosaics.

Membrey is mentioned in documents in the Middle Ages under the name Membriacus . The origin of the place name is unclear. The name could go back to mensionagium (Latinization of a Gallic word for house ) or to the Roman personal name Memorius . In the Middle Ages, Membrey was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont area . The Lords of Ray held local rule until the 17th century, after which Membrey passed to the Marmier family. The village was sacked and pillaged by troops of the Duke von Zweibrücken in 1569. The place was also affected during the Thirty Years' War. Together with Franche-Comté , Membrey finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Membrey is a member of the community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières, which comprises 42 localities .

Attractions

The Notre-Dame church was built from 1831 to 1836 on the site of a medieval church (mentioned in 1211) in the neoclassical style. The remarkable furnishings include an altar made of white marble, a richly carved oak pulpit , several side altars from the earlier church and various paintings from the 19th century.

The Fontaine- Lavoir , which once served as a wash house and cattle trough, dates from the 19th century . Its roof is supported by numerous pillars. Other sights include the bakery , the five-arched stone bridge over the Vannon from 1775, a calvary from 1610 and the remains of the Roman estate.

With 217 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Membrey is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly during the 20th century (620 people were counted in 1881), a slight increase in population has only been recorded since 1999.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Membrey was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are various local small-scale businesses, especially in the construction and precision engineering sectors. The most important employer is a medical-educational institute. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road from Gray to Combeaufontaine . There are other road connections with La Roche-Morey , Ray-sur-Saône and Seveux.
