Cromary is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cromary is located at an altitude of 236 m above sea level, seven kilometers south of Rioz and about 15 kilometers north of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department on the edge of the wide valley plain of the Ognon , north of the ridge of the Fort de la Dame Blanche (Grande Côte).

The area of the 5.36 km² large municipality covers a section of the middle Ognon valley. The southern and eastern borders always run along the Ognon. This flows here with several meanders through an alluvial plain that is one to two kilometers wide and an average of 220 m. It is dammed up to form an elongated lake east of Cromary. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the valley floor to the adjacent plateau, which is partly wooded, partly with arable land and meadow. It consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period . In the northeast, the area extends into the wooded valley cut of the Ruisseau de Malgérard , a right tributary of the Ognon. At 282 m, the highest point in Cromary is reached in the Bois de la Chenove .

Neighboring municipalities of Cromary are Sorans-lès-Breurey in the north, Aulx-lès-Cromary and Palise in the east, Vieilley and Mérey-Vieilley in the south and Perrouse in the west.

history

The noble family von Cromary is first mentioned in 1131. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Cromary developed into the center of an important Kastlanei. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Cromary is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 localities .

With 164 inhabitants (1999), Cromary is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (253 people were counted in 1896), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cromary was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are various local small businesses. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The place is away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Voray-sur-l'Ognon to Loulans-Verchamp . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 km away. There are other road connections with Vieilley and Sorans-lès-Breurey.
