Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux is located at an altitude of 230 m above sea level, 5 km southeast of Rioz and about 18 km north-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the south of the department in the wide valley of the Ognon on the edge of the heights of Châtelard.

The area of the 5.89 km² municipal area covers a section of the middle Ognon valley. The southern border mostly runs along the Ognon. This flows here with several meanders through an alluvial plain that is one to two kilometers wide and averages 225 m. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northwards over the valley floor to the adjacent plateau of Le Châtelard . This consists of an alternating layer of calcareous and sandy-marly layers from the upper Jurassic period . It consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. At 332 m, the highest point in Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux is reached on a knoll north of the Bellevaux valley. To the west, the municipal soil extends over the plateau into the wooded valley cut of the Ruisseau de Malgérard , a right tributary of the Ognon.

Neighboring communities of Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux are Traitiéfontaine in the north, Cirey in the east, Valleroy and Aulx-lès-Cromary in the south and Sorans-lès-Breurey and Neuvelle-lès-Cromary in the west.

history

Remains of a Roman aqueduct and other finds from this period indicate an early settlement of the municipality of Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux. The place is first mentioned in 1140. At that time it was owned by the Saint-Vincent monastery of Besançon. Chambornay was settled much earlier. The first settlement was on the hill near the pre-Romanesque chapel of Saint-Justin. In the course of the 12th century the area was cleared and made arable by the monks of the Cistercian monastery of Bellevaux . The Chambornay settlement was then moved to the edge of the valley by the source of the Doye, and the property was transferred to the Bellevaux monastery. In the Middle Ages, Chambornay belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today, Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays Riolais, which comprises 33 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Germain church originally dates back to the 12th century (the choir from that period has been preserved). The ship was rebuilt in the 18th century. The rich interior includes furniture from the 18th century, the statue of the Vierge de Pitié from the 16th century and various grave slabs. The pre-Romanesque chapel of Saint-Justin on an elevated position west of the village dates from the 10th century. It has been changed several times over the centuries.

With 185 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 216 people), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chambornay-lès-Bellevaux was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. In the meantime, the place has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The place is away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Voray-sur-l'Ognon to Loulans-Verchamp . Further road connections exist with Traitiéfontaine and Neuvelle-lès-Cromary.
